- Cut the capsule (the material covering the top of the bottle). This cut should be
made just below the bulge that is found on all wine bottles. Do not cut above the bulge.
Cut all the way around using the tip of the knife.
- Make a slit in the foil from the first cut to the top of the bottle, grasp the
foil between the knife and your finger and pull the top of the foil away. If it does not
come away in one piece--fine. Simply pull the remainder in a second try. You may find some
corrosion or mold--wipe this away with a towel.
- Insert the tip of the corkscrew slowly and turn until the entire worm part has
entered the cork.
- Place the elbow on the glass lip of the bottle, pull the end of the corkscrew
slowly and evenly upward and the cork will withdraw from the bottle. If the cork begins to
bend, grasp the cork with your hand and wiggle--DO NOT TWIST--the cork the rest of the way
out of the bottle.
- After the cork has been removed, wipe the mouth of the bottle inside and out,
with a towel.
